Every year for Christmas, i will usually book a staycation at one of the local hotels to spend the day enjoying the facilities like infinity pool, comfortable huge bed and take lots of photos. Not only that but i will find hotels at locations where i can have a good Christmas dinner nearby and lastly not forgetting morning breakfast which i will definitely wake up for! A couple of years back i spent it at Big Hotel (now replaced by Hotel G), last year was M Social and this year after shortlisting a few hotels, i have decided on Hotel Indigo, Katong!
Address: 86 East Coast Road, 428788
Katong is one area in Singapore where you can discover Peranakan culture as you can find all the little shophouses, stores and eateries selling Nonya snacks and dishes. (Not forgetting the famous Katong laksa!)
I was enticed by the highest tier room - King Bed Premier View Room with bath tub as the room is located on high floor and it featured a bath tub overlooking Katong! Checked in to the hotel at 3pm and upon entering the hotel, i immediately noticed the Peranakan culture design reference such as flowery tiles and art murals.
The room has a little dining area with a sofa and table with a Carrom board top which i find really unique. They even provided a brand new set of carrom disk for guests who wants to have a game or two, really thoughtful and unique. Other that that there is a comfortable king bed, and the toilet is separated into 2 areas. One with the toilet bowl and basin, one area for standing shower and the open concept bathtub and basin.
Even the cups have this old school design! Every single detail in the room was very well thought and guests (especially singaporean) could reference it to the olden days. The cups, the cushion design, the basin design was modelled off the old sewing machine, the mixed tiles, the red wooden clog slippers, it was a delight to see how everything come together to form the overall design of the room. The King Bed Premier View Room (with bath tub) also comes with complimentary parking, Wifi, Nespresso machine as well as breakfast for 2.
One of the reason why i picked Hotel Indigo this year was also because of the infinity pool on the roof which overlooked the whole Katong neighbourhood! It would be really nice to laze by the pool or have an evening swim with a view like this. Other than the infinity pool, there is also a 24 hour gym on the roof.
Not forgetting to take photos for the gram. LOL
This year, we decided to have our Christmas dinner in-room as we wanted to maximise time in the room since we paid close to $300 for just a night at this hotel. With so many eateries nearby and a mall just right beside the hotel, i could get what i need and prepared a simple setup for our Christmas dinner! Looks pretty good hor? Got whole roast chicken, sausages, Rosti, sides, ham and cheese and drinks to celebrate Christmas!
Breakfast was served at Baba Chews, a bar and eatery located within Hotel Indigo. Read reviews online and apparently they serve really good local and Peranakan dishes. For breakfast, the typical breakfast food were available. Bread and pastries counter, cereal counter with toppings, fruits, bottles of fresh fruit juice, yogurt etc.
The breakfast menu was also another reason why i chose this hotel. I'm someone who loves to have hotel buffet breakfast, probably because i tend to skip breakfast day to day (probably why i enjoy brunches) and breakfast at Baba Chews entails a breakfast menu on top of the usual! Everything sound so good on the menu and they were even specials such as their take on local delights such as wanton me, loh mee and loh mai kai!
Ordered the Loh mai kai as well as Eggs Benedict which was served with crispy ham and Rosti
Being super greedy, we also ordered a portion of congee and the Kaya toast set! Super satisfying. LOL
Went back to the room, relax a little and had a little bubble bath before checking out at 1pm. (Checkout is at 12 noon but we requested for late checkout) I read online that guests in the King Bed Premier View Room (with bath tub) can request for late check out up to 3pm subject to availability. We did not managed to get till 3 but hey, another hour to enjoy the room is not bad too!
Overall i had a great time at Hotel Indigo and would even recommend this place for locals for a staycation as you get to reminisce the olden days with the Peranakan inspired design, shop around Katong 112 and the shop houses (I would totally recommend Sinpopo and Birds of Paradise!). I would say the location is slightly off there is no train station nearby but i guess the area is good enough to explore for a day or two before moving to somewhere else. After all there are still buses :)
